Finding the right senior living community

These four tips can help you get started

When it comes to choosing senior living communities in Topeka, Kansas, there are many great options available. While it is good to have multiple choices, choosing the one that is best for you and your family isn’t always easy. Here are some tips to help you get started.

1. Evaluate Care Needs

If you or your loved ones are active and independent and can manage personal care, medications, and other activities, then an independent living community may be the best choice. However, if daily activities, such as dressing, bathing and meal prep, pose challenges, or if falls have occurred, then assisted living may be the best option.

Then, with a clear idea of which living arrangement is best, you can begin to search for those types of settings. Of course, seniors who are currently independent may experience declines in health, so a life plan community that offers both independent and assisted living, as well as other types of care, may be ideal.

2. Do Your Research

Once you have determined which type of living arrangement is right for you, ask your friends and family members for references. Search online for reviews, and visit each community’s website to learn more about services, amenities, and other options.

3. Schedule a Visit

Once you have narrowed down your choices, schedule visits at all your prospective communities. This is the most important part of the process, so you may want to include a few friends or family members for support, so you can compare notes after the tour. In addition, it’s important to ask questions, and your support team may have some good questions that you may not have considered.

4. Consider the Budget

If the pricing information is not available online, ask for it during your visit. Obviously, this is a significant factor to consider. While you want the pricing to be reasonable, you also want to be sure that the facility and the staff can provide the level of care you need, both now and in the future.
